Volcanic glass, polished to stillness.
Black obsidian is natural volcanic glass, and this 60 mm sphere is hand-polished to a deep, glossy black that softly mirrors the room. Long kept as a protection stone in crystal tradition, it is often chosen for grounding when a workspace or entrance feels crowded and overstimulating. Give it a place on a desk full of screens, where the eye needs one dark, still point.
Why it is chosen
- Traditionally associated with the root chakra, the base of steadiness, and with Saturn, earth and fire.
- Often chosen for protection and grounding by people whose days are loud, fast or full of screens.
- Formed when lava cools quickly, it is glass rather than crystal, which gives it that liquid, mirror-like depth.
How to use it
- Place it on your desk, a shelf or near the entrance, where your eyes fall when you look up from work.
- Sit or stand with your feet flat and your posture grounded, then let your gaze drop to the sphere for a few breaths.
- Keep it clear of hard floors and busy hands.
Is it right for you
People who work long hours at screens, households with a busy entrance, and anyone who wants a grounding object with a sculptural presence.
If the sphere will sit where children or pets play, the Black Tourmaline Crystal Ball is the sturdier black stone, since obsidian is glass and can chip. See it here.

Care
Obsidian is natural glass: a knock against stone or tile can chip it and leave a sharp edge, so lift it with both hands and keep it on a padded, stable base. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth to keep the gloss free of fingerprints, and avoid soaking it. For a traditional cleanse, let sage or incense smoke pass around it with a window open.
Questions
Is obsidian a kind of glass?
Yes, but a natural one. Obsidian forms when volcanic lava cools too quickly to crystallise, which is why it is so glossy; it is not man-made glass.
Is this real black obsidian?
Yes. Every piece is lab tested and certified, and once your order arrives you can look up its certificate with your order number on our Lab Certificates page.
Will black obsidian protect my home?
Many people keep it with a protection intention, as crystal tradition suggests. We offer it as a grounding object for the room, and we do not claim it blocks or repels anything.
The Pocket Book of Stones。

Robert Simmons
