Meaning

Howlite meaning

Howlite is a soft, chalky white mineral webbed with fine grey veins, named after Henry How, the Nova Scotia chemist who first described it in 1868. Our canon knows it simply as the calming stone, with three centres: the Crown, the Heart, and the Root as the path that settles calm into the body. People reach for it when thoughts run fast and reactions come too quickly, and in the quieter hours at the end of a day.

Breathing is most of it: rest howlite in one hand, breathe slowly into the belly and murmur “My body softens. My mind slows.” Overstimulated people, those who run hot inside, and anyone who finds it hard to switch off tend to take to it. The canon sees it as slowing the pace of feeling, so anyone already flat, numb or unmotivated is pointed towards a warmer, livelier stone.

We share these associations as tradition, not as a promise of results.

Care

How to cleanse and care for howlite

Best ways to cleanse it: Moonlight · Selenite plate · Smoke

How howlite bears each cleansing method, and what our practice does
Method Can it bear it? In our practice
A brief rinse AvoidHowlite is soft and porous, so water and oils can mark it. We skip it
A bed of salt AvoidSoft and porous, it takes up the damp that salt draws in. We skip it
Morning sun BrieflyKeep it from heat; dyed howlite can fade. We skip itIn the KUSHA chakra system, Crown stones stay out of the sun.
Moonlight YesBy a window, for three to five hours only. We use it
Smoke Yes We use it
Sound Yes We use it
A selenite plate Yes We use it

We use it: named for this stone in our canon. Not usually: safe for the stone, but not a method we name for it. We skip it: our practice keeps it away.

Pairings

What howlite sits well with

From the KUSHA canon, the stones most often set beside it.

In the KUSHA canon, selenite always goes with a grounding stone, so add one such as smoky quartz or black tourmaline when you set the two together.

Kept apart from moldavite. The KUSHA canon never pairs moldavite with a Crown stone: together they can open too much at once.

A note of care

Before you use it

A slowing stone: on flat or low days, a warmer stone may suit you better.

Real or fake

Is my howlite real?

Howlite is often dyed to imitate turquoise or lapis; natural howlite is white with grey veins. We sell howlite as natural, and your lab certificate comes with your order.

  • In its own colours howlite is opaque chalk white to pale grey, with darker veins forming an irregular web.
  • White magnesite frequently passes for howlite and looks very similar, so a firm identification needs a laboratory.
  • Howlite is never naturally blue or brightly coloured; on dyed pieces the colour sinks into the veins and around any drill hole, looking deeper there.

Is howlite good for beginners?

Yes. Howlite is a gentle stone, good to begin with. A slowing stone: on flat or low days, a warmer stone may suit you better.
