Meaning

Black Onyx meaning

Black onyx is chalcedony, a fine-grained quartz, in a dense, even black that takes a deep and quiet polish, and the name is Greek for fingernail. Strictly, onyx is chalcedony banded in black and white, and the solid black stone shares both its name and its material. In crystal tradition it stands on two centres, Root and Solar Plexus, and is associated with staying power, self-discipline and calm, well-kept boundaries.

Black onyx is an everyday stone in our collection notes, worn through working days and on journeys, and it also sits beside the glass nazar bead in evil eye pieces, where the eye is offered as a reminder of awareness rather than a charm. It is worn by people whose days ask for discipline, focus and long hours. Should a stretch of wearing it leave you feeling emotionally flat, set it aside until you feel more like yourself.

We share these associations as tradition, not as a promise of results.

Real or fake

Is my black onyx real?

Most black onyx on the market is chalcedony dyed black, a long-standing and stable practice. Ask us to see the lab report for the piece you are choosing. Ask us what the piece you are choosing is before you buy; your lab certificate comes with your order.

  • The even black of most black onyx is produced by a long-established dyeing process, stable and lasting, applied to paler chalcedony.
  • Imitations are mostly black glass and resin: look for mould seams, and on beads check the drill holes for a coating that has chipped or flaked.
  • Well-polished onyx has a bright lustre and a cool, smooth touch, while resin feels lighter and soon loses its shine.
