Meaning
Sugilite meaning
First described in Japan, sugilite carries the name of the geologist Ken-ichi Sugi; it is a rare mineral whose colour runs from deep grape to magenta, often mottled with black. Empaths and people who spend their days looking after others often choose it, and in crystal tradition it belongs to the Crown and the Heart, associated with compassion that keeps its edges.
A meditation space, a quiet corner of the bedroom or a private altar is where our notes would keep it, out of long hours of direct sun. Think of it for anyone whose kindness is in constant demand, at home or at work, and who wants to stay warm without being worn thin.
Not yet profiled in the KUSHA canon: these notes come from our collection notes and crystal tradition.

Real or fake
Is my sugilite real?
Sugilite is often stabilised with resin, and dyed stones are sometimes sold in its place. We sell sugilite as natural, and your lab certificate comes with your order.
- Natural sugilite is mottled rather than uniform, with patches of deeper and paler purple and often black matrix running through it.
- Dyed substitutes, usually howlite, magnesite or quartz, give themselves away with colour concentrated along veins and cracks, a web of dark lines, or a paler core at a drill hole.
- Charoite, its frequent companion, is a different stone, with silky, swirling fibres rather than sugilite’s granular mottling.
Asked about sugilite
Sugilite, answered
Can sugilite go in water?
No. Sugilite is often stabilised and can be porous, so keep it dry.
Can sugilite go in the sun?
Not in our practice. In the KUSHA chakra system, Crown stones stay out of the sun. The stone itself takes only a little sun.
Can sugilite be cleansed on salt?
No. Keep it off salt, which can mark a stabilised surface.
How do you cleanse sugilite?
In our practice, the best way to cleanse sugilite is sound.
What does sugilite mean?
First described in Japan, sugilite carries the name of the geologist Ken-ichi Sugi; it is a rare mineral whose colour runs from deep grape to magenta, often mottled with black. Empaths and people who spend their days looking after others often choose it, and in crystal tradition it belongs to the Crown and the Heart, associated with compassion that keeps its edges.
Which chakra is sugilite linked with?
Sugilite is traditionally linked with the Crown and Heart chakras. From our collection notes, its element is water and its planets are Jupiter and Neptune. Not yet profiled in the KUSHA canon: these notes come from our collection notes and crystal tradition.
What does sugilite pair well with?
From our collection notes, sugilite sits well with amethyst and charoite. We keep it apart from moldavite. The KUSHA canon never pairs moldavite with a Crown stone: together they can open too much at once.
Is sugilite good for beginners?
Yes, with a little attention. Sugilite is a steady stone, easy to live with.
Where should I keep sugilite at home?
In our practice, sugilite suits the bedroom or prayer corner.
