Meaning

Emerald meaning

Emerald is green beryl, its colour drawn from chromium or vanadium, and its name travels back through Old French and Latin to the Greek smaragdos, a green gem. In India it is known as panna. Its place in crystal tradition is the Heart, with the Solar Plexus beside it, and people turn to it for patience and for decisions guided by what they value rather than by hurry.

Our collection notes picture it in the living room or on the desk, kept where you will notice it often, a quiet prompt to grow steadily and fairly. It sits well with people building something slowly, a home, a practice or a business, who want to keep their values in view. We make no promise of prosperity, and those who follow Vedic astrology wear panna only when their astrologer advises it.

Real or fake

Is my emerald real?

Most emeralds have fine fractures filled with oil or resin, a long-standing trade practice. We sell emerald as natural, and your lab certificate comes with your order.

  • Almost every emerald is filled with oil or resin to soften the look of its natural fissures, a practice the trade has long accepted.
  • Real emerald is seldom clean: gemmologists call its inclusions jardin, French for garden, and a flawless, vivid stone at a low price is more likely glass or lab-grown.
  • Under magnification, glass reveals round bubbles and swirl lines, and dyed pale beryl or quartz shows its green caught in cracks.
  • Carving and bead material is naturally more opaque and included than faceted gems.
