Meaning
Amethyst meaning
Purple quartz coloured by traces of iron and natural radiation, amethyst carries an old Greek name, amethystos, meaning not drunk, from a belief that it kept the mind clear. In the KUSHA canon it is the stone of stillness: cooling, spacious and quieting, it slows a racing mind without dulling it. Its chakras are the Third Eye and Crown, and the canon thinks of it as the exhale stone, the release that brings you back to the present.
Between the brows is where the canon places it, for sixty to ninety seconds of breathing in for four counts and out for six, with the words “My mind quiets. My energy returns.” It is a natural first stone for people who think and feel a great deal, who are easily overstimulated or who find clarity hard to reach when everything is loud. Its coolness can tip into too much quiet when you are already drained or flat, or feel unmoored and far away; on those days a warmer stone is kinder.
We share these associations as tradition, not as a promise of results.
Care
How to cleanse and care for amethyst
Best ways to cleanse it: Selenite plate · Moonlight · Smoke
| Method | Can it bear it? | In our practice |
|---|---|---|
| A brief rinse | BrieflyGIA rates warm soapy water safe; avoid steam and heat. | We skip itOur practice keeps water cleansing for a few named stones only. |
| A bed of salt | Yes | We skip itOur product care keeps finished pieces off salt. |
| Morning sun | BrieflyLong direct sun can pale amethyst; a few minutes of morning light is fine. Keep crystal balls out of direct sun: a polished sphere can focus light like a lens and scorch what is near it. | We skip itOur practice keeps amethyst out of the sun to keep its colour. |
| Moonlight | YesBy a window, for three to five hours only. | We use it |
| Smoke | Yes | We use it |
| Sound | Yes | We use it |
| A selenite plate | Yes | We use it |
We use it: named for this stone in our canon. Not usually: safe for the stone, but not a method we name for it. We skip it: our practice keeps it away.
Pairings
What amethyst sits well with
From the KUSHA canon, the stones most often set beside it.
Kept apart from carnelian. The KUSHA canon keeps carnelian apart from amethyst and smoky quartz: those two are its stones for anxious seasons, and carnelian, a warming activator, is never given then.
Kept apart from moldavite. The KUSHA canon never pairs moldavite with a Crown stone: together they can open too much at once.

A note of care

A cooling stone: on very tired or low days, a warmer stone may suit you better.
Real or fake
Is my amethyst real?
We sell amethyst as natural, and your lab certificate comes with your order.
- Amethyst is imitated in purple glass and dyed quartz, and lab-grown crystal turns up in faceted jewellery.
- Natural amethyst is seldom one even shade: tilt it to find zones of deeper and paler purple, often angular, with colour gathering at the tips of points.
- Bubbles like tiny pearls, or a piece that warms quickly in the hand, suggest glass.
- A flawless faceted stone may be lab-grown, which only a laboratory can confirm.
