Meaning

Moldavite meaning

Moldavite is a natural green glass formed about fifteen million years ago, when a meteorite struck what is now southern Germany, and it is named for the Vltava river, the Moldau in German, in the Czech lands where most of it is found. The KUSHA canon holds it to be its most intense stone, a catalyst for deep change linked with every chakra, above all the Heart, Third Eye and Crown. The canon is plain that moldavite confronts rather than comforts, which is why it is reserved for experienced practitioners.

Moldavite is never held alone in our practice: it is paired with a grounding stone such as smoky quartz or black tourmaline, with slow, deep breaths and the spoken line “I release who I was. I enter who I am becoming.” It is meant for people whose lives are settled, who keep a steady grounding practice and have real experience, and who feel ready for large change. If you feel fragile, unsettled, worn out or recently bereaved, or are easily overwhelmed, wait; it is not a first stone.

We share these associations as tradition, not as a promise of results.

Pairings

What moldavite sits well with

From the KUSHA canon, the stones most often set beside it.

Kept apart from amethyst, labradorite, selenite, howlite, opalite, auralite 23, kunzite, rainbow moonstone, sugilite, angelite and lepidolite. The KUSHA canon never pairs moldavite with a Crown stone: together they can open too much at once.

A note of care

Before you use it

For experienced hands only, and always with a grounding stone such as smoky quartz or black tourmaline. Set it aside if you are anxious, grieving, burnt out or unsettled.

Real or fake

Is my moldavite real?

Moldavite is widely imitated in man-made glass; the natural stone comes only from Central Europe. We sell moldavite as natural, and your lab certificate comes with your order.

  • Green glass made to look like moldavite is common, and it is usually too bright, too clear or too regular.
  • Natural pieces are a muted bottle to forest green, with deeply sculpted, wrinkled surfaces, and no two look alike.
  • Under a loupe, with light behind it, real moldavite shows swirling flow lines and often worm-like inclusions; a clean interior with only round bubbles suggests man-made glass.
  • Identical shapes across several pieces, or a large piece offered cheaply, are strong warnings.
