Meaning
Hematite meaning
Polished, hematite has a mirror-grey shine, yet the Greeks named it for blood, haima, since this iron oxide turns rusty red when ground to powder. Of all the grounding stones in the canon it is the densest, a kind of energetic gravity that pulls scattered thought down towards the hips and feet. The Root is its only chakra, which the canon explains as grounding with a single focus.
You sit upright for its ritual, both hands around the stone, letting its weight settle into the hips as you whisper, “I descend into my body.” For people who live in their heads, overthink, struggle to focus or feel spacey, it is the canon’s way back to a sense of weight and presence. Its pull is strong enough that the canon keeps it from anyone who feels low, exhausted, flat, frightened or on edge, or who is working through something very hard; there it can deepen a collapse rather than steady it.
We share these associations as tradition, not as a promise of results.

| A bed of salt | AvoidSalt holds damp, and coated or reconstituted ‘hematite’ rusts. | We skip it |
| Morning sun | Yes | Not usually |
| Moonlight | Yes | We skip itIn the KUSHA chakra system, Root stones stay out of moonlight. |
| Smoke | Yes | We use it |
| Sound | Yes | We use it |
| A selenite plate | Yes | We use it |
We use it: named for this stone in our canon. Not usually: safe for the stone, but not a method we name for it. We skip it: our practice keeps it away.
Pairings
What hematite sits well with
From the KUSHA canon, the stones most often set beside it.
With care beside smoky quartz. Smoky quartz steadies almost any stone. Beside obsidian or hematite it can feel heavy, so we skip the pair for anyone prone to panic.
A note of care
Before you use it
A very heavy grounding stone: keep sessions short, and set it aside when you feel low, numb, exhausted or anxious, or while you work through something painful.
Real or fake
Is my hematite real?
We sell hematite as natural, and your lab certificate comes with your order.
- Most strongly magnetic hematite jewellery is a man-made material, often sold as magnetic hematite or hematine.
- Genuine hematite is barely magnetic, so beads that snap to each other or to a fridge magnet are almost certainly manufactured.
- The real stone is dense enough to surprise you and cold to the touch, and unpolished faces often show a reddish-brown tinge.
Asked about hematite
Hematite, answered
Can hematite go in water?
Not in our practice. Our practice keeps hematite away from water. The stone itself takes a brief rinse.
Can hematite go in the sun?
It can. Sunlight will not harm it. It is not one of the methods we name for hematite, so we do not usually use it.
Can hematite be cleansed on salt?
No. Salt holds damp, and coated or reconstituted ‘hematite’ rusts.
How do you cleanse hematite?
In our practice, the best ways to cleanse hematite are a selenite plate, smoke and sound.
What does hematite mean?
Polished, hematite has a mirror-grey shine, yet the Greeks named it for blood, haima, since this iron oxide turns rusty red when ground to powder. Of all the grounding stones in the canon it is the densest, a kind of energetic gravity that pulls scattered thought down towards the hips and feet. The Root is its only chakra, which the canon explains as grounding with a single focus.
Which chakra is hematite linked with?
Hematite is traditionally linked with the Root chakra. In the KUSHA system, its element is earth and its planets are Saturn and Mars. We share these associations as tradition, not as a promise of results.
What does hematite pair well with?
In the KUSHA system, hematite sits well with black tourmaline and red jasper. With smoky quartz, take care: smoky quartz steadies almost any stone. Beside obsidian or hematite it can feel heavy, so we skip the pair for anyone prone to panic.
Is hematite good for beginners?
Take it slowly. Hematite is a strong stone: begin with short wear. A very heavy grounding stone: keep sessions short, and set it aside when you feel low, numb, exhausted or anxious, or while you work through something painful.
