Smoky quartz owes its brown-grey veil to natural radiation in the rock, acting over long ages on traces of aluminium within the crystal. The canon places it midway between the lightness of clearing stones and the deep rooting of the heaviest grounding stones: a calming stone that draws intensity down from a busy head into the body without adding weight. - Much of the smoky quartz in the trade is clear quartz darkened by artificial irradiation, and smoky glass turns up too.
- Untouched smoky quartz is usually soft and a little uneven in colour, often paler towards the base, sometimes with ghostly phantom outlines inside.
- Inky, almost black clusters of identical points are often irradiated, and spherical gas bubbles mean glass.
