Meaning

Ruby meaning

Ruby is red corundum, the same mineral as sapphire, and owes its colour to chromium; the name descends from the Latin ruber, red. Known in India as manik, it ranks among the oldest stones of courage in Indian tradition. Crystal tradition places it with the Heart and the Solar Plexus, a pairing that suits confidence led by warmth rather than force.

A desk or a prayer corner is where our collection notes would put ruby, and its raw chips are often kept in a small bowl, a pouch or a simple grid. People who begin things well and want a steady reminder to see them through are often drawn to it. In Jyotish, or Vedic astrology, ruby is worn only on the advice of an astrologer.

What ruby sits well with

From our collection notes, the stones most often set beside it.

In the KUSHA canon, selenite always goes with a grounding stone, so add one such as smoky quartz or black tourmaline when you set the two together.

Is my ruby real?

Most ruby on the market is heated to improve its colour, and some lower grades are filled with glass. We sell ruby as natural, and your lab certificate comes with your order.

  • Most ruby is heated to improve its colour, which is standard in the trade, and the usual substitutes are glass-filled ruby, lab-grown ruby, garnet and red glass.
  • Under a loupe, expect a natural ruby to show fine silky needles, tiny crystals or uneven colour, since flawless stones are rare and costly.
  • Glass filling shows as blue or orange flashes along cracks, and in opaque carving material, colour gathered in cracks means dye.
  • Corundum is dense, so ruby feels heavier in the hand than glass of the same size.
