Meaning
Lapis Lazuli meaning
Rather than a single mineral, lapis lazuli is a rock: deep blue lazurite, threads of white calcite and small gold flecks of pyrite. Its name joins the Latin lapis, stone, to a Persian word for the stone itself, the same root that gives English the word azure, and ground fine it became the ultramarine blue of Renaissance art. The KUSHA canon calls it the authority stone, tied to the Throat and Third Eye chakras and chosen for honest speech and a calm sense of standing; its energy is deep and noble, cooler than tiger’s eye and firmer than blue lace agate.
Our ritual for lapis is a sentence spoken at the throat, “My voice is clear and true,” with the stone resting there through a few deep breaths. It is often a fit for people who swallow what they mean, who feel unheard or who are learning to use their voice again. Lapis can loosen the tongue, so the canon would wait on it when feelings are already spilling over, when talk runs fast, or when you tend to say more than you meant.
We share these associations as tradition, not as a promise of results.

Real or fake
Is my lapis lazuli real?
Lapis is often dyed or waxed in the trade, and dyed sodalite or howlite is sometimes sold in its place. We sell lapis lazuli as natural, and your lab certificate comes with your order.
- Its look-alikes include sodalite, dyed howlite or jasper, and lapis dust bound in resin, and real lapis is itself often deepened with dye or wax.
- Good natural lapis is an uneven, intense blue with irregular gold flecks of pyrite and touches of white calcite.
- Blue gathered in cracks or around a drill hole, or white patches with a blue cast, suggest dye.
- Sodalite is a cooler royal blue with broad white veins and seldom any gold.
